Membership Benefits

Membership in the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine provides significant benefits to AOM colleges.

  1. National Office
    The Council's national office is located in Baltimore, MD and serves as a direct resource and communications hub for the Councilís member schools in addition to providing information to the general public concerning the Councilís member colleges and their programs. The office is staffed Monday through Friday.

  2. CCAOM Clean Needle Technique Course
    The national office is also the Councilís CNT Program headquarters. The Council provides a nationally recognized certificate program in Clean Needle Technique. Successful passage of this course is required for NCCAOM certification. Membership in the Council entitles AOM colleges to participate in the CNT Program by having the opportunity to host a CNT course at the member school and to have a faculty member trained as a CNT instructor. The Council also offers a CEU course on acupuncture safety.

  3. Web Site:
    The Councilís web site includes hot links to the Councilís member schools, a U.S. map showing the location of schools, information about the Council and its committees, notice and schedules of upcoming meetings of the Council, the Code of Ethics for member colleges, newsletters, resources for members, and links to other national organizations in the AOM field.

  4. Bi-Annual Meetings
    The CCAOM conducts bi-annual meetings each spring and fall. These meetings offer Council members the opportunity to participate in a plenary forum for discussion of issues that affect AOM colleges and the broader profession, to attend without charge valuable panel and workshop events, and to contribute to the mission of the Council in promoting excellence in AOM education through the work of its committees.

  5. Committee Activity
    The Council currently has 18 committees comprised of representatives from its member colleges. The committees perform significant work for the Council and many meet face-to-face at each biannual meeting. A list of committees appears on the Councilís website at

  6. Member Training
    The Council offers trainings for the benefit of its member colleges at each of its bi-annual meetings. There have been workshops on a variety of topics for college Presidents/CEOs, clinic directors, academic deans, admissions personnel, librarians, student services officers, etc. A list of workshops and panels from 2002-2014 is in the Appendix at the end of this document.

  7. Communication with ACAOM
    The Council works closely with ACAOM in shaping and revising curriculum and has made key recommendations to ACAOM over the years concerning Masters and Doctoral degree level programs. At biannual meetings of the Council, ACAOM submits an updated written and oral activity report to the Council and the Commissionís representatives appear before the Councilís Accreditation Committee for informal dialogue about topics related to the site visit process for AOM schools.

  8. Doctoral Programs
    The Council was largely responsible for drafting the first doctoral proposal for the Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) degree, which was subsequently approved by ACAOM in 2002. The Council has participated actively in the deliberations of ACAOMís Doctoral Task Force concerning the development of standards for a first-professional doctorate degree. ACAOM published those standards in 2013 and is currently accepting substantive change applications from eligible AOM programs that wish to offer this new degree.

  9. Working with national organizations
    The Council works with other national organizations in the AOM and CAM fields to forward the AOM profession. For example, the Council is a member of the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM), Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Health Care (ACCAHC), National Association of Advisors for the Health Care Professions (NAAHP), Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR), and the International Tiger Coalition. Each March the Councilís Executive Committee invites a number of national AOM organizations to participate in an informal dialogue concerning issues of mutual interest and to explore collaborative opportunities.

The Council has two full-time staff members serving the organization. David Sale, J.D., LL.M., is the Executive Director of the Council. He works closely with the Council President and Executive Committee, other committees, and the colleges. Paula Diamond, B.S., is the Program Manager for the Clean Needle Technique (CNT) program at the national office and the Finance Administrator responsible for the day-to-day finances of the Council.

In addition to the forgoing benefits of Council membership, many benefits are intangible and include information and resource sharing among the Councilís schools, collegiality, and support for a variety of college activities.
